Actin Crosslinkers: Repairing the Sense of Touch
نویسندگان
چکیده
Cells use actin bundles infused with myosin to exert contractile forces on the extracellular environment. This active tension is essential for cellular mechanosensation. Now, the role of actin crosslinkers in stabilizing and repairing the actin bundles is coming into clearer view.

The actin crosslinking protein palladin modulates force generation and mechanosensitivity of tumor associated fibroblasts
Cells organize actin filaments into higher-order structures by regulating the composition, distribution and concentration of actin crosslinkers. Palladin is an actin crosslinker found in the lamellar actin network and stress fibers, which are critical for mechanosensing of the environment. Palladin also serves as a molecular scaffold for α-actinin, another key actin crosslinker. By virtue of it...
متن کاملInteractions between Myosin and Actin Crosslinkers Control Cytokinesis Contractility Dynamics and Mechanics
INTRODUCTION Contractile networks are fundamental to many cellular functions, particularly cytokinesis and cell motility. Contractile networks depend on myosin-II mechanochemistry to generate sliding force on the actin polymers. However, to be contractile, the networks must also be crosslinked by crosslinking proteins, and to change the shape of the cell, the network must be linked to the plasm...

BACKGROUND Among the Aristotelian senses, the subcellular and molecular mechanisms involved in the sense of touch are the most poorly understood. RESULTS We demonstrate that specialized sensory neurons, the class II and class III multidendritic (md) neurons, are gentle touch sensors of Drosophila larvae. Genetic silencing of these cells significantly impairs gentle touch responses, optogeneti...

متن کاملDesign principles for selective self-assembly of active networks
Living cells dynamically modulate the local morphologies of their actin cytoskeletons to perform biological functions, including force transduction, intracellular transport, and cell division. A major challenge is to understand how diverse structures of the actin cytoskeleton are assembled from a limited set of molecular building blocks. Here we study the spontaneous self-assembly of a minimal ...
